Symbolism of Piggy's Glasses

Throughout the novel, the glasses symbolized the power that society held over the young boys. As piggy cleans off his glasses, “the frame ha[s] made a deep, pink V on the bridge” (11) of his nose, signifying the close proximity between Piggy, and rational, scientific thought. Nevertheless, Piggy’s glasses go beyond the fact that they aide his vision. Just like their owner, they are a symbol of science and reason amidst chaos. As the only physical remnant of society, the glasses are used “as burning glasses” (55) to light the signal fire. As Jack and the hunters prepare for their next hunt, they let the signal fire sputter out. When they return exultant, Ralph, Piggy and Simon are twisted with rage at their unperturbed attitude towards their responsibilities, the two divisions begin to quarrel. In a fit of rage, Jack beats Piggy, which is when the "glasses flew off and tinkled on the rocks" (100). When Simon retrives them, they notice that ""One side's broken,""(101) which signifies the inevitable divide between the two factions.Even as the schoolboys slowly revert to their savage nature, and the idea of rescue dwindles from their thoughts, Piggy’s glasses keep his vision clear. Unfortunately, when vital entities fall into the wrong hands, they no longer hold their original meaning. Thusly so, when the “three figures trotted toward castle rock…[carrying] Piggy’s broken glasses,” (242) the specs made the transition from a symbol of society to that of supremacy. In an attempt to reclaim the glasses, and goaded into savagery, Ralph loses sight of their goal. Only Piggy, through his close relationship with the glasses, was able to make him remember "what they came for. The fire. [His] specs" (255). Overall, Piggy’s glasses convey a message to the reader of the importance of technology in society and clarity in reason.
